COMMANDER’S
MESSAGE
Sometimes, it feels good to remember. Here's a short
quote from the active duty
creed when we were sworn in, "I (your name) will
support and defend the constitution
of the United States of America." Now,
those days are gone and turned into good stories
and memories.
Be proud, you completed your enlistment and was discharged as
"Honorable" soldiers, sailors or airmen.
This month of events
begins with the Post
membership dinner on
Sunday, November 9, 2008 from
4:00 to 6:00 p.m., this dinner free to all (Post. Unit and
Squadron) members who have an early bird stamped on their
membership card for
2009. For everyone
else and their guests there will be a $5.00 donation
requested. Then on Tuesday,
November 11, 2008
is the Veterans Day
parade, it will step off at 10:30 a.m. in front of the
V.F.W. Post 168 on Deer
Street, turning south onto Middle Street, turning west onto
Islington Street and finishing at Goodwin Park. Come and join us to
either march in the
parade or perhaps stand in
front of the Post in support as the parade marches by or
consider attending
the ceremony at Goodwin Park. "Let us not let them be
forgotten." I have
flags here at the Post for those who request them. Later in the month, the Post will
be serving our traditional Thanksgiving dinner, no one will be
turned away who comes
through our doors for this celebration of times. This dinner
will be served on Thursday, November
27, 2008
from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. We at the
Post pride ourselves as being one of the cornerstones of the
Community. Please consider volunteering to help with the
membership dinner or for any of the upcoming events within the
Post. I am always
looking for new ideas for fund raising throughout the year. If
you have any good
motivators to help raise money to keep our numerous programs
operating, please contact
me at (603) 436-7575 or E-mailing at
cmdr_post6@comcast.net.
All of your inputs are
welcomed.
I presented amendments to the Post floor to change
the Post By-laws on
August
21, 2008. The amendments are under
Article VI, Section 3,
Meetings,
under Article X,
Section
2 Duties of Officers and
currently there is no Leave and Earnings description for
annual/sick leave for those employed under the Post,
i.e. Janitors. I feel an outline is in
order. These amendments
will be voted on at the Thursday, November
20, 2008
meeting. Please
try and attend this
meeting - a two-thirds vote of those members
present will prevail.

I have been
receiving mail from our membership about their renewal
status that has already been sent
in and received their
2009
membership card. The only report I have for you is that
these forms are automatically generated and mailed quarterly
without fail from National
Headquarters. If you currently
hold a 2009
membership card, disregard
any further renewal
notices for the year and in the future when you renew your
current year's membership, again disregard any
following notices for that year until this issue is
resolved. National Headquarters apologies for any misunderstandings to
the membership but their goal is to keep you and all
members in continued service with the American
Legion. Please continue to read the entire newsletter, we as
officers of the Post, Unit, Grille Steward and
Squadron put as much information as possible into the
newsletter and work hard to keep you informed of upcoming events within the Post, as always these
events would not be made possible without volunteer's.
A WWII solder told me "Never
get into a foxhole with a solder braver then you." Until next
month,

JUNIOR
VICE COMMANDER’S MESSAGE
We have a
number of functions on the horizon for the Post. Veterans Day
we have the ceremony at Wal-Mart at 9:00 a.m. and then the
Parade at 10:30 a.m. from the V.F.W. to Goodwin Park. We would
like to see a good turnout of all members of the Legion,
Auxiliary and S.A.L. that day. Please attempt to be there. The
meal will be at the V.F.W. following the parade.
We will be
having our annual Thanksgiving Dinner at the Post on
Thursday, November 27, 2008 from 12:00 p.m. until 4:00
p.m. We need volunteers to help the night before preparing the
food and the next day. We need help prepping, serving and
cleaning up on Thursday. I will have a sign up sheet for
volunteers in the Post for the Thanksgiving set up and
everything.
Our
Children's Christmas Party will be on Sunday, December 14,
2008. We will have it from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. for
ages up to 6 years old and 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. for ages 7
to 10. Please make sure you designate their age, gender so we
get the proper gift. If you have children in both age groups,
please designate a time you will be there for both. Please
note that on your slip you submit. In order to get the best
gifts for your children, we need to have a cut off date of
Sunday, November 16, 2008. We have a company that
provides us with the presents and the sooner we notify them
the better for our children. No names will be accepted after
this date. Please help us and not sign up any later than
Sunday, November 16, 2008.
I want to
thank Shirley Williams, Janice Brown, Russ Brown, Karyl Horn
and Paula Hollingsworth for their help at the Halloween Party
on the 26th of October.
Richard “Brooksie” Brooks, Jr. Vice Commander

TREE RAFFLE

Saturday, December 6, 2008 the Unit will be holding a
Cherry Tree Raffle. You pick cherries off the tree for $1.00
and match a number to the prize. We will have lots of prizes
and it is a lot of fun. So come down and support us. It is
an all day event or until all the cherries are picked off the
tree.

GRILLE
STEWARD’S MESSAGE
Hello again,
here we are in the month of November, time sure has flown by!
Hope everyone had a great Halloween. Don't forget our
Membership Dinner. Sunday, November 9, 2008. Free for
all members with an early bird stamp and $5.00 without the
stamp. I would like to start having potluck on Football
Sundays, anyone interested in bringing in a dish can sign-up
in the grille so come on down and watch the game. On
Sunday, November 16, 2008 we will be having a chowder
contest with a $5.00 entry fee. There will be a 1st Place
trophy along with an honorable mention for 2nd Place, so get
ready to cook-up your best chowder (fish, corn, seafood,
etc.). The time will be at 2:00 p.m., judging will be at 4
p.m. There will be a sign-up sheet in the Grille. I would
just like to remind the members to please have their guest
come to the front door and be escorted in by the member. If
coming in the back door they must walk-in with that member to
be signed in. That is the rules of the post/grille.
Remember we have Karaoke every second Friday of the month with
some very talented singers come in and get ready to be
entertained. Thanksgiving is on the 27th. I hope everyone
has a great day. Don't forget to purchase your plaque for the
bar top. This would be a great Christmas gift or you could
buy one in memory of a friend or a loved one. The cut off
date is Monday, December 15,
2008,
so don't miss-out! Until
next month stay safe and warm.

Grille Steward
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Chillier
weather is upon us. Come join us at the following events to
gather and warm up. Each Saturday there is Surf 'N Turf at
the Post starting at 3:00 p.m. There is always loads of fun
as the games are won. The third Saturday of the month is the
Auxiliary's turn. Monies raised on our weekend go toward
sending girls to Girls State and for the Auxiliary
Scholarships. Unit #6 is raffling an Afghan to raise monies to
send packages to the 29 guys currently stationed in
Afghanistan. The address and names of the 29 are posted in the
Grille if you would like to pick a name to send your own
package as well. These men are tasked with securing the area
as planes pick up the bodies of fallen soldiers. They need a
lift, especially during the holidays, since they are not with
their own families and planted in a hostile environment. The
drawing for the Afghan is on Monday, November 10, 2008.
The cut off date for signing up your child or grandchild
for the Children's Christmas party is Sunday, November 16,
2008. The reason for the early cut off date is so that we
can have a better quality present available for our
Member’s child or grandchild through the company that we
purchase the presents. Please be sure you fill out the sign
up sheet early. On Saturday, November 1, 2008 at the
Epping Post #51 is the Fall Conference South. Come join the
fun of visiting with the Department Chairmen to ask questions
about what you do in your life that is reportable to the
Auxiliary, Post, |
Legion
Riders and Sons for report time in the spring. This
information you supply the Unit, Post, Legion Riders and Sons
that we put into reports, are consolidated at the Department
level and again at the National level and then reported to the
United States Congress. Congress is the entity that allowed
the American Legion to exist and without the reports showing
that we, as members of our organizations, accomplish
worthwhile community services, Congress could decide that we
do not need to exist.
On Monday,
November 3, 2008 the 8/40 gathers at the Newmarket Post
for the Initiation Ceremony of all new Partners in the 8/40.
Partners wear white to this event. The next Unit #6 meeting
is on Thursday, November 13, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. We need
helpers at future events. If you can help, please call me or
sign up at the Post letting us know that your talents are
available to us.
On Friday,
November 14, 2008 District #3 meets at the Newmarket Post.
All members of the Auxiliary, Post, Squadron and Legion Riders
are welcome and encouraged to attend. Come listen to what is
going on in our area. On Thanksgiving Day, Thursday,
November 27, 2008 the Post puts on a Thanksgiving Day
Dinner that is free and open to the public. The Auxiliary is
being asked to make pies for this event. Please stop in at the
Post to sign up letting us know that you are willing to donate
a pie or two. We do not want to buy pies to ensure there are
enough, because homemade pies are always better! On
Monday, December 1, 2008 the Christmas Gift shop takes
place at the Manchester VA Hospital. Donations of NEW
items are needed. This is, for some resident Veterans, the
only way they can give their family anything for Christmas.
Any member is welcome to attend this event to help Veterans
pick out their presents or to wrap the presents for them. Any
donated items need to be in
the Post
before Saturday, November 29, 2008 so that we can
deliver them on Sunday, November 30, 2008. Also on
Monday, December 1, 2008 the 8/40 will be having their
Christmas Party at Strafford Farms at 6:00 p.m. On Saturday,
December 6, 2008 Unit #6 will be holding their 4th Annual
Cherry Tree Fundraiser at the Post. Donations of New or
SLIGHTLY USED items are needed to raise monies for the
Auxiliary programs. Bring them in anytime and we will store
them for you. This is the same day as the Portsmouth Christmas
Parade. What better way to stay warm while waiting for the
Parade to arrive then to come in, buy a "Cherry" for a dollar
and win a prize. Thank you for all the help you are able to
give to our great Organizations.

Unit President & District #3 Director
