 NEWSLETTER

Founded 1919

 August 2008

 Commander -- Frank Desper

COMMANDER’S MESSAGE

I want to thank Hannaford’s for their wonderful donation to the Legion Baseball team. The sandwiches really helped getting them through their double header. Our regularly scheduled Executive Board meeting is being moved up to August 14, 2008.  Please try to attend; the Post needs your input. Nominations for Post Delegates are soon approaching; we are authorized 9 primary and 9 alternates. These positions are key figure heads within the organization and are required to meet 4 times a year. As an added privilege should you become a Delegate, the Post will provide you with a room at the State Convention. If you would like to get involved please contact the Post Adjutant. The Post rededication is August 9, 2008 that's just a few days away. A lot of people have put their hearts and souls in the preparations for this event. I encourage all members to please attend. I spoke with the Commander of the V.F.W. Post 168, and we agreed that the "Old Timers Game" will be held on September 21, 2008 at the Portsmouth Middle School ball field, starting at 11:00 a.m. He also told me that his Post will be hosting the concession stand. Male players have to be 40 years or older and women can be any age. But, all players have to be members in good standings with their organization to play. Check out the Adult Outing Committee column for information on the date, time and events. Set the sea and anchor detail for entering port, the ship expects to be alongside the pier August 9, 2008 at 12:00 p.m. Bring your family to visit her.

We are setting up for several events this year, one will be, super surf & turf with jumbo shrimp, huge lobsters, thick cut steaks and several large prize games not to mention our famous point games. We are also having a bean bag toss game (just like horseshoes). There will be an entry fee that will be divided up and awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners along with some nice prizes to the best teams. We will be holding 50/50 raffles all day hosted by the Post, Unit and Squadron. The upstairs hall will be open after the surf and turf game for the cribbage and poker players. Sign up sheets will be posted in the grille if you are interested in these games. The menu we will be providing is B.B.Q. ribs and chicken with potato salad, macaroni salad, pasta salad and baked beans. It will be a cash bar with live entertainment for enjoyment. Come out and support your Post, we had a good time planning this event and we hope you enjoy it more. We do have to remind everybody

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Congratulations to George McCall our Department Commander. George is the 4th member of Frank E. Booma Post #6 to attain this position. Congratulations to Richard Brooks for being appointed District #3 Chaplain and to Elliott Antequera for his appointment to District #3 Historian.

Congratulations to Megan Turner. Megan attended Granite Girls State and is as of this writing in Washington D.C. attending Girls Nation. Your contributions helped pay her fees to Granite Girls State.

On August 9, 2008 you are invited to 96 Islington Street to attend the rededication ceremonies of our Post home. We hope to have the chance to meet members whom we have never seen and to reacquaint with those that used to frequent the Post home. I am assured that there will be plenty of fun.

National Convention will be August 22 – 28, 2008 in Phoenix, Arizona. Not as many will be attending this year as in years past, but I am sure those that do attend will learn plenty and have a great time doing it.

The next Unit meeting will be on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008 at 7:00 P.M. Please know you are welcome to attend. We try to keep the meetings to an hour in length. The Adult Outing will be on Sept. 13, 2008. Read on for more information. The District #3 meeting will be held on the THIRD Friday in September, September 19, 2008 at the Exeter Post at 7:00 PM, due to prior commitments of the District Commander Ken Maynard of Epping. The traditional Old Timers Game against members of the Portsmouth VFW will be played on September 21, 2008 at 11:00 AM at the Portsmouth Junior High field. Please stop in to cheer on your friends.  Yours in Service,

 Sheila Brooks, Unit President

GRILLE STEWARD’S MESSAGE

Hello again, here we are in the month of August, wow! Summer is almost gone. We have some awesome bands this month, if you have not heard them yet, you are missing out on some great dancing. As always Jen Thayer rocks the Legion as well as Ron Jones, who has been around for many years in the seacoast area. We have our adult outing coming up on September 13, 2008 starting at 2 p.m. with BBQ spare ribs and chicken with all the fixings as well as frozen drink specials and a special surf and turf game upstairs in the hall. Get here early, the cost is free to members of our post and $10.00 for members of other posts and all guests. Please have your 2008 membership card ready so our volunteers can make sure you get right though the lines and have a fun day! Also August 24, 2008 we are having a chili contest in the grille starting at 2 p.m. There is a $5.00 entry fee with first and second place winners, cash prizes will be awarded so bring on the heat!!!!! We will be having our annual old timers softball game Sunday September 21, 2008 against the V.F.W Post #168, if you missed the game last year it was one of the best ever played by both teams, it really was a close game. Every year Post 168 does a great job serving up food after the game. Betty Berky and her staff deserve a hand. Don't miss out on the fun, come to the Portsmouth Junior High School baseball field, the game starts at 11 am, so come out and cheer for your favorite team or player. Until September stay safe and enjoy the summer.
