 NEWSLETTER

 Commander -- Frank Desper

COMMANDER’S MESSAGE

My hat is off to all the members of Frank E. Booma Post 6 Family.  Your total support for volunteerism throughout last month is commendable.  I want to list the events briefly because so much hard work and time was spent making it all possible.  The month started off with the Memorial Service at Post 69 in Somersworth.  Then we had the testimonial dinner for Department Commander George McCall which was incredible.  A special THANK YOU goes out for your volunteerism for that event, I received repeated comments from all the attendees, some were, “it was one of the best testimonial dinners I have ever attended… the food was great…. everyone helping is very pleasant.”  I was pleased to hear their compliments and I want to pass it on to you, again, thank you. Then the Post supported the Memorial Service in Prescott Park, also in attendance was, Central Veterans Counsel, VFW post 168, Fleet Reserve of Chapter 7 and the Portsmouth Middle School Band.  To close the month’s Memorial Service’s at the USS Albacore and the Memorial Day Parade.  Your hard work and dedication to the Post made it all possible.  Moving forward, the Post next event is Flag Day, Sunday, June 14, 2009 at 5:00 p.m., to be held in the Post parking lot.  The Post has been invited to B.P.O.E. Lodge 97, in Portsmouth, to attend their Flag Day service held on Sunday, June 14, 2009 at 11:00 a.m.  Then on the weekend of 26, 27 and 28 of June is our Department Convention held in Lincoln, NH., for those of you who are delegates, this is a must show event, contact me for further information.  For those who are not delegates, I encourage you to attend to take part in the future of the American Legion and its programs.  If you wish to stay for the entire convention you will have to reserve a room, contact the Post Adjutant for more information on room reservations.  After convention, we will be gearing up for the Children’s outing and the Adult outing.  I want to take a moment and talk to you about communicating about departed members of our Post.  There has on occasion when the family of a deceased member does not request memorial services and the Post is not contacted by the Funeral Director as to the fallen comrade.  Although we are not asked, we still perform a small service at our Post meetings to remember our departed comrades.  Please contact me if you have/ or know a deceased member of the Post.  It is my sad duty to report that Ernest “Ernie” Webber (31 year member) has been called upon by our Supreme Commander, may his soul go marching on.

 Frank Desper, Post Commander

 JUNIOR VICE COMMANDER’S MESSAGE

The Children's Outing is going to be on Sunday August 23, 2009. It will be held at Chuck E. Cheese in Newington starting at 11:00 a.m. There will be pizza, soft drinks, cake & ice cream along with some tokens for the children. The outing will be for children under 17, plenty of games for all ages. Chuck E. Cheese has very strict rules regarding children arriving and leaving with the same parent/guardian; children must leave with the same adult they arrived with. Please use the signup slip provided for the names of children and a parent/guardian per family attending, to help us meet Chuck E. Cheese safety and accountability rules. There will be an envelope in the grille for the sign up slips. The sooner the slips are in the better for an accurate count of those attending.  The Adult event is in the works and I will have more information on that when things are decided.

 John Moulton, Junior Vice Commander

GRILLE STEWARD’S MESSAGE

Hello again.  I hope everyone had a safe and fun Memorial Day.  Our Mother’s Day Brunch went well.  The food was great and of course the help putting it together as always was the best!  This month on Sunday, June 21, 2009 we will be having a Father’s Day Brunch free to all members and their guests starting at 12 noon to 2 p.m. with Bill Loomis playing his famous doowop starting at 3 p.m. for your enjoyment.  So bring that special Father and enjoy the day.  We will be having draft beer specials as well as Bloody Marys.  Win, Place and Show are back and of course they always rock the house.  If you have not heard them, you do not know what you are missing!  Saturday, June 20, 2009 is still up in the air.  We are waiting to hear from one of your favorite bands as Dirty McCurdy had to cancel due to a scheduling mistake on their part.  There will be entertainment that night so make your plans to come out and be surprised.  We would like to welcome back our snow birds.  It is always nice to see your smiling faces as summer begins.  I would like to thank the many non members for all their support with our functions. Trudy Huff and Alan Hall really helped us out with George McCall’s Testimonial Dinner - could not have done it without you.  Again thank you.  See you in July.  Hope everyone stays safe and wears their sun screen.

 Sue Desper, Grille Steward

UNIT NEWS

This year Unit 6 awarded $2750.00 in scholarships.  Congratulations to Charles Cheatham, Amber Calvert, Nick DeMatteo, Angela Kearsey, Hannah Fernandes, Kayla Kearsey and Jenaya Paradis.  Your support at the Unit Surf and Turf on the third Saturday of each month helped to make this possible.  Thank you.  At the May Unit meeting we voted to send two girls from Portsmouth Senior High to Granite Girls State, a citizenship program held the week of June 28- July 3, 2009 at Rivier College in Nashua.  Thanks to S.A.L. Squadron #6 and American Legion Post #6 for their generosity and help in making this program a success.

Karyl Horn , Education & Girls State Chairman

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Thank you for having faith in me by electing me as your President for the third year. I am sure that with the slate of Officers elected in the Unit as well as the slates of the Post and Sons, Frank E. Booma family will have a great year.

I would like to congratulate Brooksie and Jim Minot for their elections to Adjutant and Chaplain respectively.

Regretfully I have accepted the resignation of Janice Brown as First Vice President. Paula Hollingsworth will be given the option of remaining as Second Vice President or moving up to 1st Vice President. At the June meeting we will be nominating and electing a new Vice President to fill the vacant slot. If you would like to fill this position please attend the June meeting or have a letter of intent into Karyl Horn or myself prior to the start of the June meeting.

The second year as President is about over. The third will start soon. I am looking for members of the Unit that are interested in holding Chairmanships. If you think you have any time to put into the chairmanships of the Auxiliary please be at the meeting on Thursday, June 11, 2009. I will have information on the chairmanships as well as a paper for you to mark your preferences. At the end of the meeting I will need the papers back so that over the summer I can try to satisfy your desires while trying to divide the duties among all who attend as well as those that let me know what chairmanships they are willing to attend to.  Your Unit is at 102.52% in paid memberships for 2009. WELL DONE LADIES !!!! Getting your memberships into Karyl Horn in a timely manner helps a lot and makes Karyl's job sooooo much easier. District #3 (which Unit #6 is a part of) was the 2nd District in the state to attain 100% membership. We are currently in 3rd place in the State but only .64% behind 1st place District #4.  Department Convention is June 26, 27, and 28, 2009 in Lincoln , NH .

Hopefully District #3 will be in first place at that time. If any Legionnaire has female family members that would like to join our Organization please contact myself or membership chairman, Karyl Horn or ask the bartender at the Post for an application. We will gladly accept your application to join our fold.  About the cookbook. Please go back to last month’s bulletin and donate a recipe or two. We need to get the project going. We only have a dozen recipes so far. That is not enough to make a recipe book!!!! Please help the Unit succeed in this to use as a fund raiser.

Sheila Brooks, Unit President & District #3 Director
